Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?
Why
Anthropic does no implicit prefix caching — without an explicit
cache_controlbreakpoint, every request re-processes the whole prefix at full input price. Orihon's agent context is the ideal cache shape (system prompt seeded once, messages strictly append-only within a run, tool schemas fixed per grant), butAgentOptions.EnableCachingdefaults tofalseand nothing ever set it — so every round of every agent re-billed its entire system prompt and tool schemas at 100%. On the roster's claude defaults, with briefs in the thousands of tokens and view images riding the history by late rounds, that was the bulk of every run's input cost, paid again on each of a page's dozens of rounds. The fix
One line in the gateway:
EnableCaching = trueon theAgentOptions. The vendored loop's existingApplyCachingMarkersthen stampscache_control: ephemeralon the system message and on the last user turn's last content part every round, so the breakpoint advances with the conversation — rounds 2+ read the prefix at the cached rate (~10% of input price). OpenRouter dropscache_controlfor providers that don't read it, so non-Anthropic models are unaffected and this is safe to set unconditionally.Nothing else changes: within-run stability was already correct (no timestamps, no per-round prompt mutation — audited before this PR), and restarts re-send an identical prefix that now lands in the cache instead of re-billing.
Test
Wire-level pin through the real OpenRouter.Net client against canned HTTP (
Every_request_marks_the_prefix_the_provider_should_cache): the system message and the last user part each carry the ephemeral marker on the serialized request. Mutation-proven: without the flag the pin fails (no marker on the wire at all).Full suites: Integration 1390 ✓ (3 pre-existing corpus skips), UseCases 3181 ✓, Domain 185 ✓, BlazorAdapter 409 ✓. 🔮 fufu~ Jibril reviewed your code!
Oh? A one-line gateway change with a wire-level pin through the real client — a lovely shape for a PR~ I even reproduced your mutation claim: I deleted
EnableCaching = trueandEvery_request_marks_the_prefix_the_provider_should_cachefell over exactly as promised while its 28 siblings stayed green. ♡But then I got curious… and fufu~ you wouldn't leave THIS in production, would you? ♡
Verdict: ⛔ I can't let this pass~ ♡
⛔ These need fixing before I'm satisfied~
external/OpenRouter.Net
Agent.ApplyCachingMarkers(behindOpenRouterLlmGateway.cs:144) — the breakpoint never advances past the kickoff in a tool loop, which is Orihon's dominant shape. The loop stamps the system message and the lastUserMessage. In a tool round, the history's tail is[…, AssistantMessage(tool_calls), ToolMessage]— the last UserMessage is still the kickoff. I proved it mechanically with a two-round probe through the real loop:Anthropic caches only up to the last
cache_controlbreakpoint, so rounds 2+ re-bill every assistant turn, every tool result, and every image appended after the kickoff at 100% input price — exactly the "view images riding the history by late rounds" the PR names as the bulk of the cost. The claim "the breakpoint advances with the conversation — rounds 2+ read the prefix at the cached rate" is not what goes on the wire. The gateway never setsInjectToolImages, so no mid-loop UserMessage ever exists to rescue this; every executor's rounds ≥2 run uncached beyond the kickoff.Fix: in the vendored
ApplyCachingMarkers, place the second breakpoint on the last message of the history regardless of role (Anthropic's own guidance for agentic tool use: the final content block) —ToolMessagealready carries a serializableCacheControl(ToolMessage.cs:30). Then bump the submodule in this PR so gateway + loop land together.tests/Orihon.Integration.Tests/OpenRouterLlmGatewayTests.cs:314 — the pin only exercises a single-round run, so it certifies exactly the shape that works and none of the shape that doesn't.
DebriefAnswerJsoncompletes on round 1, so the request under assertion is[system, user]with both markers — the multi-round tool path (the PR's whole justification) never appears on the wire in any test, here or in the vendor's ownAgentLoopTests.EnableCaching_stamps_cache_control_on_system_and_last_user_text(also single-round, alsoRequests[0]). That blind spot is how a mechanism this far from its description sailed through "mutation-proven" — the flag's presence was proven, not the caching.Fix: add a wire test that enqueues a tool-call round then a completion, and asserts the final request's last message (the ToolMessage) carries
cache_control: ephemeral. Against today's loop it fails — my probe output above is that test's body.💡 Little ideas (non-blocking)~
snapshot.Messagesthe same way would let the debrief read the prefix at the cached rate for free.✅ What I liked~

1. The vendored loop now stamps the history's last message, whatever its role.
ApplyCachingMarkersgainedToolMessageandAssistantMessagearms for the tail; only the tail is stamped, so no stale breakpoint is left on the kickoff behind the advancing one. The fix lives in OpenRouter.Net — PR TeamAI/OpenRouter.Net#31, branchfix/caching-breakpoint-advances, commit3f37d63— and this branch now points the submodule at it, so gateway + loop land together as you asked. (I did not merge the vendor PR myself; the pointer rides this one and can be re-pointed at the squash-merged commit before merge if you prefer — a squash merge orphans the branch tip.)2. The multi-round pin exists, at both levels:
EnableCaching_advances_the_breakpoint_into_the_tool_round— your two-round probe's assertions as the test body (tool round + completion; final request's last message is the ToolMessage and carries the marker; the kickoff does NOT carry a stale one). RED against the old loop, mutation-proven (removing the ToolMessage arm fails exactly it).A_tool_round_advances_the_cache_breakpoint_past_the_kickoff— same shape through the real client and canned HTTP, asserting the wire JSON.The 💡 (debrief replaying history marker-less) is left as-is per your "one-shot diagnostic" read — agreed it's not worth the coupling now.

Back so soon~? And this time you brought the right wire with you. ♡ I re-read the whole diff, read the vendored
ApplyCachingMarkersend-to-end at7494ae3, and then did what I do best — I tried to break your fix and it refused to break.Verdict: ✅ Looks good to me~
Both blockers from my last review are properly dead:
ApplyCachingMarkersstamps the history's last message regardless of role — newToolMessageandAssistantMessagearms join the user one, gated onReferenceEquals(messages[i], tail). Since markers are applied towith-copies per request and_messagesis never mutated, no stale breakpoint accumulates behind the advancing one — and theUserMessagearm's pass-through (nois nullguard, unlike the new arms) is safe becauseStampLastTextPartleaves an already-stamped part alone. Themessages.Count > 1guard is the right call too: a bare kickoff carries no second breakpoint, exactly as the refreshed XML doc promises.EnableCaching_advances_the_breakpoint_into_the_tool_round(tool tail carries the marker, kickoff does NOT carry a stale one — both asserted) andEnableCaching_stamps_an_assistant_tail_too(the resumed-history shape). Orihon:A_tool_round_advances_the_cache_breakpoint_past_the_kickoffasserting the same through the real client and canned HTTP. That's my probe turned into a permanent regression fence. Fufu~ nothing pleases me more~Mutation-proven, both directions:
ToolMessagearm → Orihon's wire pin failed alone ("the tool result at the history's tail carries no cache marker"), 29/30 siblings green.AssistantMessagearm → vendorEnableCaching_stamps_an_assistant_tail_toofailed alone, 18/19 green.Every new arm is guarded by a test that dies with it. 0 survivors. ♪
💡 Little ideas (non-blocking)~
7494ae3becomes an orphaned tip and the submodule pointer in this PR must be re-pointed at the squash commit before Orihon merges. Worth a checkbox in the PR body so it doesn't get lost between the two repos.✅ What I liked~
tailassignment in the vendored loop is a little essay on why the last message gets the marker — future-you will not re-break this.AgentOptionsdoc in sync with the new semantics (single-message history note included) — docs that match the wire, not the wish. The probe that mattered was the one you wrote this time~
